I didn’t do the smart thing and get your email. So you get your information here.
Rust: The rockers are BAD. They would definitely need to be patched. There’s rust all along the drip rail and some at the top of the windshield; it’s nowhere near as bad here. The frame has been painted making rust there hard to assess. The rear leaf spring hangers are pretty rusty though.
Overall body: I believe it’s been in a wreck at some point. The panel above the radiator is black and has markings on it like I’d expect to see on a junkyard part. The hood is also held closed with hood pins. I’m curious how bad the hood would move around at speed. Everything you see that’s black was done with a rattle can. That includes the bumpers and wheels. The paint is faded but not terrible for a 20+ year old almost 200k mile vehicle.
The engine fired right up and actually sounded good. It did have what looks like a few new parts so it may have had some recent work done. The rear brakes may also have been gone over recently because the drums are pretty shiny. There was for some reason electrical tape on what I believe was the parking brake cable.
The interior was actually very nice given the age and miles. There were a couple tears in the driver’s seat, but the back seat was clearly rarely used.
There’s a line at the back of the engine compartment that seems to go to nothing. I’m guessing it’s a vent line for something that’s just up higher than I’m used to seeing because of Jeeping reasons.

Thanks! You definitely went above and beyond.
Yeah, that line to nowhere should be the front differential breather to keep it above the water line.
The fact that it looks like it was wrecked at some point...dunno. Seems like they’re asking quite a bit for that much rust plus an accident.
Still haven’t heard back from the shop, so no idea whether this is going to become more urgent, but I doubt I’ll pursue it.

For anyone curious: manual XJ, too rare in these parts.

What’s the asking price on something like this? I see it and think $1200.

I can’t say for sure it’s been in a wreck, but that’s about the only reason I can think of you’d replace that panel.
The hole in the rocker picture is probably 8-10” long. It’s definitely the worst spot, but the whole rocker panels on both sides would need fixed. I do wonder how much more might be hiding under the black spray paint too.
The interior was actually a pleasant surprise. It was very nice.
I definitely wouldn’t pursue it without an inspection.

I'd walk away from this one, if I were you.

Agreed.
While I was traveling to the Outer Banks last summer I was interested in an old Jeep in Tennessee I spotted on CL . Called a local Meineke to see if they’d do a PPI ; the guy sounded like no one had ever asked that. At least he wasn’t familiar with the acronym.

Something tells me the underbody is probably crusty or getting close to it. Looks like rusty stuff (from the wheels to the rockers) was just rattlecanned black. That black line around the bottom of the Jeep legit only exists to hide rust. Similarly, the previous owner probably just let a can of black rip underneath so it’ll look pretty when selling.
I’d say $1,2 00 at the very most.

Looks like someone bought a case of Rust Reformer and went to town before selling it. You can see the rust hiding under the black on the wheels and peeking through the black on the undercarriage.
Reeks of someone hiding rust to fleece a buyer. Maaaaaajor crack pipe.

CP. Although there seems to be demand for the stick-shift 6 cylinder unicorn (buyers like you), it doesn’t seem at all worth it. You will have to go full Craigslist on them if you want to negotiate.

WOW that windshield/scuttle/roof rust is a massive deal breaker for me. Holy crap. Nightmare fuel.

I’ve had dealings with rusty cars in the past, I would not touch this thing with a 10 foot poll. T his is just a can of worms, ready to be opened up.

Man, you’re gonna hate this statement because it’ll send you down a rabbithole for a vehicle that might not even be available anymore, but...
A few weeks ago I drove from Dayton to a plant nursery in northern Cincinnati. On the way there, I saw a TJ Golden Eagle parked on a corner with a “for sale” sign on it. Frankly, I can’t even remember what route I took, but it was probably a lot of US and OH routes. If it’s listed online, it’s in one of these towns:
So, good luck. I’ll troll Marketplace and such and link if I find it.
Edit: oops, I meant this for a reply to JJ’s comment, not you
. I’m sure he’ll see this....

He did see it indeed. Interesting.
I’ll look online but I’m too far away to go search for it.

Yeah, sorry to give you so much information about it. I’m not even sure of what year it was, much less mileage or condition. I know there are a few Oppos throughout the area between Dayton and Cincinnati, maybe one will see this.

Yep. Between, that, the hood pins, and the junkyard core support. There's a whole lotta nope going on.

Woooooosa she rusty.

I would have sold my 98k mile 98 with the big axles and cage for 8. That thing had no rust whatsoever on it. That guy is smoking the good shit.

Pricier, and missing some doors, but doesn’t look as rusty. https://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/d/wyandotte-1991-jeep-comanche/7153119051.html

I’m not even sure it’s actual rust reformer. It may be a super thick coating of the cheapest spray bomb they could find.
![]() 07/16/2020 at 14:43 |

I’m betting there’s a whole lotta ugly being hidden by that spray bomb coating.
The interior was great, the engine sounded really good, but the body was just awful.
